FAQs

What is a birth doula?

A birth doula provides information, emotional and physical support to expectant parents during pregnancy, labour and delivery and the early postpartum days. They are there to listen to your needs and help you have the best birth experience possible. They are not medical professionals, they are there to encourage, reassure and empower parents through the birth process.

What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula will assist the new parents during the adjustment period after the baby is born. They will provide an opportunity for parents to discuss the birth and give emotional support. They are there to listen and help in the day-to-day tasks that need to be done. They will care for the baby while parents have a nap or take a shower, wash dishes and do light household tasks and generally lessen the burden on new parents so that they can rest and heal.

When should I hire a doula?

The best time to hire a doula is in the second trimester (anytime between 20 - 30 weeks gestation is ideal). That gives ample time for you to get to know the doula and begin planning for the birth.

My partner wants to be my main support person, can we still benefit from having a doula?

Of course, doulas work alongside partners to ensure that the birthing parent is always supported. Labour can be a long and difficult process and your partner may require rest and breaks. Also, experiencing birth as a partner can be overwhelming, your doula will be there to reassure your partner, provide tips for ways to support you and assist them with communication with medical staff.
